Chapter 1

     How did it all begin?

It was a rainy autumn night some time back - October of '96, as I recall. I was just known at "The Detective" back then. I was knocking back a few beers in my favorite jazz joint, "Cool Sam's". It's on Wabash Avenue in Chicago, under the El tracks and not far from my office.
Suddenly, through the blue smoke, I saw this sultry redhead looking anxiously around on the other side of the room. I recognized her from my days at the Bureau: Special Agent Dana Scully. I also recognized her from the photo spread she did in a British magazine, FHM, when she was undercover and using the name "Gillian Anderson".
She spotted me and rushed over. "I need your help, Detective," she whispered breathlessly. "You're the only person I can turn to."
"What about Fox Mulder?" I asked, recalling that Dana and Fox usually worked together.
"This involves computers. Fox thinks computers are alien devices put on earth to drive mankind mad," she said. "You're the only one who can help me on this!"
She then spread out several photographs on the bar before me and angrily jabbed a shapely finger at them. "Look! Look!"
I looked. I looked closer. They were nude photographs of Agent Scully! I looked even closer.
"That's enough!" she snapped. "Well, what do you think!?"
"I think you look kind of pudgy in that one picture," I replied. "Was it taken when you were pregnant?"

"No! It isn't my body! It's a fake photograph! They're all fakes!" And suddenly she started to cry. Nothing affects me faster and more deeply than a sobbing female.
I examined the photographs once again, this time more carefully. Yes! They were fakes! I could see that three of the fake photographs actually used the same head shot! Someone was trying to sully Scully!
"I need you to prove that these are fakes!" she sobbed. "I need you to tell the World that they are fakes! I want my good name back! I'll do anything. Anything!"
"Shucks, Little Lady," I responded. "I appreciate the offer, but when I encounter a damsel in distress I work pro bono - that means I work for free for the public good."
"Thank you, thank you, thank you," she breathed.

     "And then I woke up.

"It was a very vivid dream. The previous day I had found these three fake pictures of Gillian Anderson on a UseNet newsgroup, and they'd obviously started my subconscious to working overtime.
