Gina Smith from ABC Radio does an Interview with The Fake Detective on March 14, 1998:

Gina = Gina, The Fake Detective = FD

Gina:  All right, now we’ve been talking a lot about this.  The Fake Detective.  His name is Ed Lake, and he’s a retiree.  Right, Ed?

FD:  Yes, that’s pretty much it.

Gina: You’re retired, but not any more.  Your job is you … I guess you’re looking for fake celebrity photos … or you’re trying to look at the nude celebrity photos that are there and are trying to decide which ones are fake.

FD: Well, basically I collect pictures, and if I spot a fake during my collecting process I decide whether or not it’s worth exposing, and if it is I create a case file and put it on the net.

Gina: And you have a web site where you put this?

FD: Yes, there is a web site.

Gina: What’s your web site?

FD: It’s called Lair Of Lux Lucre dot com slash detective slash.  But the best way is to do a search on Fake Detective and you’ll find it.

Gina: All right, do a search or go to Lair of Lux Lucre dot com slash detective slash or go to our web site. … Here’s my question: This is a big activity, isn’t it?  Like a lot of people on-line are constantly like on the hunt for nude celebrity photos?

FD: Yes.  It’s a world-wide phenomenon, yes.

Gina: Like aside from Pamela Anderson Lee who’s got nude pictures everywhere, I mean, who else?

FD: You mean who are really nude?  Well they’ve got Shannon Tweed and Madonna.

Gina: Are they really nude?

FD: Oh, yeah.  Madonna created  a book called "Sex" which had hundreds of pictures in it.

Gina: Ah, yes.  I knew that.  Right.  I mean, what are some of the other nude pictures that people see and maybe they don’t know if they are fake?

FD: Well, most of the nudes that are out there are video captures from movies.  You wouldn’t expect to see a nude picture of Barbra Streisand but she did a nude scene in "The Owl And The Pussycat".  So, they’re out there.  Things like that.

Gina: So, you can download a nude picture of Barbra Streisand, and then if I saw that I would say "This has got to be a fake".  I mean, she won’t get up on stage, she’s too nervous.  Why would she do this?

FD: That’s right.

Gina: But you’re saying that one is real.

FD: The topless shot from "The Owl and The Pussycat" is real, yes.

Gina: Oh.  I mean, how can you tell if it’s real?

FD: Well, basically you’ve got to know your celebrities.  So, if you know whether a celebrity has ever posed … Well, you collect them, and if you know a celebrity has never posed in the nude because you have never found any, then one suddenly appears … then you examine it carefully.

Gina: What if they done it when they were young and struggling?

FD: Well, it’s still the same process.  You have look at it carefully to see if the light on the face is coming from a different direction than the light on the body.  That’s a clue.  If the face is turned to one side, you can’t really see it clearly, then chances are it’s just someone who just looks a bit like her.

Gina: I mean is it pretty common when they just like  … I don’t know if you were on hold when we had the two guys from "Mystery Science Theater 3000" and they said that um sometimes celebrities heads are pasted on nude bodies.

FD: That’s the most common method, yes.

Gina: Yes.  The bottom line is ... I mean, do you think that most of the time when you see a nude celebrity it’s a fake?

FD: I think you have to go by the celebrity.  If it’s a nude of Madonna, then it’s probably real.  If it’s a nude of Gillian Anderson then it’s almost certainly fake.

Gina: That’s ...

FD: Collecting real nudes is a big thing on the net.  And there are thousands and thousands of them out there.  Whether there are more nudes … real nudes than fake nudes is hard to say.

Gina: I can’t believe I’m going to ask you this, but I just know going to get a lot of e-mail.  People are going to want to know: where do you go to find all these nude pictures of celebrities on-line?  Where are they finding this stuff?

FD: Mostly you can do it by doing a search on "nude celebrities".  That’s one way.  You get thousands of sites.  The other way is to go into the various nude celebrity newsgroups on UseNet.

Gina: What if I get a celebrity who has a fake nude up there and everyone thinks it real - except for you - and they check your site.  And they get mad.  And they want it down.  Is there anything they can do?  I guess not.  Right?

FD: You mean the celebrity gets mad?

Gina: Yeah.  The celebrity  says "Hey, this is a fake nude picture!  That’s not even me!"

FD: No.  There is  a group that has been formed by Alyssa Milano’s mother - called CyberTracker or Cyber Watch, or something like that … CyberTracker, I think it is …  that is going out there and try to shut down these sites that show real nudes and fake nudes of specific stars.  They sue them, they threaten to sue them for copyright infringement.  That type of thing.

Gina: Is this any hope for that?  It doesn’t sound like it’s legitimate.

FD: There is to a certain degree.  If you are making money by selling pictures of a celebrity, then the celebrity can get you on copyright … either the celebrity or the photographer can probably get you on copyright infringement.

Gina: Alyssa Milano is the little girl on Tony Danza’s sitcom, right?  She’s ..

FD: She’s on … I think she’s on …

Gina: Melrose Place.

FD: Melrose Place.  She may have been on that before.  Her mother has formed this organization, and she’s out there …

Gina: I mean, did her mother form that because of Alyssa Milano … never did pictures of her?

FD: There are … Er, she did some nudes.  She did some nude scenes in movies and she posed for some nudes.  And, I guess her mother’s biggest problem is that people sell these things on CD-ROMs and whatever, and Alyssa doesn’t get any money from it.

Gina: (Laughing).  That’s interesting.  So, the mom has no problem with her daughter posing nude … nude for like every like geek on the net.  But her problem is: Alyssa’s not making any money off of it.

FD: That’s the way I see it.  Right.

Gina: Boy, that’s something.  Wow! Ed Lake. Very interesting stuff.  Tell me again: the web site … anybody can find it by searching on "fake detective"?

FD: Yes.

Gina: So, if you collect these things and you wonder if like the picture is bogus … you can find out by going to your site.

FD: That’s right.  And I have .. my e-mail address is there.  If you find something that is very interesting, you can send it to me that way, too.

Gina: Wow.  What does your wife think of this, Ed?

FD: I’m not married.

Gina: (Laughing)  Lucky for you!  Boy!  Interesting stuff, though, Ed.  I want to thank you for this.

FD: (Laughing) My pleasure.

Gina: Very interesting.  Thank you very much.  That was … uh … Ed Lake.  He’s The Fake Detective.  His job is to find out which nude pictures on-line are real.

FD: Absolutely.
